Email tracking guide

How Gmail email open tracking actually works.

A clear explanation of what Mail Audit records, why some opens are missed, and how to use engagement signals responsibly.

A unique tracking image

Mail Audit adds a tiny image URL linked to the tracked message. It is not a visible Mail Audit badge or signature.

An open event

When the receiving email client loads that image, Mail Audit records an event and updates the dashboard.

Repeat engagement

Later image loads can increase the open count and update the latest activity time.

Important limits

Image blocking, security scanners, and privacy proxies can prevent, delay, or change how an open is recorded.

What Mail Audit stores

Mail Audit stores the sender, recipient, subject, tracking identifier, timestamps, status, open count, and limited open-event technical information needed to display your tracking history.

Email body storage is disabled by default. Mail Audit does not promise perfect detection because every receiving email client handles remote images differently.

A recorded open is an engagement signal, not proof that a specific person read every line or made a decision.
